The center is the site of our therapeutic programs for people with mental and physical challenges, but it also available to rent for special events. There is a large program/meeting room, a small room, television/game room, and kitchen.

Center hours are 8:30 am–5:30 pm Monday - Friday.

Therapeutic Recreation is using recreation services and leisure experiences to help people with limitations make the most of their lives – physically, mentally, emotionally and socially. Therapeutic Recreation has a lot to offer:

  • THERAPY – to improve functional abilities, enhance well-being and facilitate independence.

  • LEISURE EDUCATION – to teach or enhance recreation skills and attitudes that can be used throughout life.

  • RECREATION PARTICIPATION – to promote health and growth through leisure and recreation experiences.

Therapeutic Recreation is important because it can help people of all ages and backgrounds to get well, live well and stay well.

CLASSES AND ACTIVITIES FOR ADULTS WITH PHYSICAL DISABILITIES OR INJURIES

Wheelchair Basketball
Adults interested in this fast-paced sport of basketball will learn the rules, regulations and skills necessary to compete in this sport. Guidance will be offered in selecting and acquiring a sport chair. Participants will form Fayetteville's own wheelchair basketball team and will compete against
teams from the region.

ADULT DAY PROGRAMS

SPADES
Special Populations Adult Daytime Enrichment Sessions, or S.P.A.D.E.S,. is an adult centered program geared for higher functional ability levels and focuses on maximizing independent functioning, providing
opportunities for socialization and community integration, and enhancing life satisfaction. A wide variety of activities include exercise, creative/expressive arts, cooking/baking, issues groups, nature and horticulture therapy, community outings, speakers, and more.
18+; Tues. and Thurs.; 10 am-2 pm; $4/day

PHASE II
PHASE II is an adult centered program geared for lower functional ability levels and focuses on maximizing independent functioning, providing opportunities for socialization and community integration, and enhancing life satisfaction. A wide variety of appropriate activities include exercise, cooking/baking, nature & horticulture therapy, community outings, and fine motor skill activities.

CLASSES/ACTIVITIES FOR TEENS AND ADULTS WITH DEVELOPMENTAL DISABILITIES

Bocce
Players bowl game balls to get them as close as possible to a special target ball.
Bocce helps develop or increase hand-eye coordination and is an activity in which
individuals with severe disabilities can participate and develop a high level of skill. This game is
played outdoors, so program is weather permitting. Registration is required.

H.O.P.E. (Helping Other People Excel)
The Gilmore Therapeutic Recreation Center is committed to helping other people excel. We make available, through this program, resources for people with disabilities and their caregivers working toward successful integration into the community. Participants must be accompanied by a parent, guardian or caregiver. Basketball, pool and exercise equipment is available ONLY during posted hours and may be unavailable due to other special events and/or center programming.

Fun Friday
Interested in meeting new people and exploring leisure opportunities in your community? Do you enjoy traveling and socializing with your friends? Take part in learning about local leisure resources. Each month we will plan a special Fun Friday outing to places such as museums, theatre shows, riverboat cruises, etc. Participants will be responsible for all outing costs. Registration is required.

Gardening Club
How does a garden grow? Let's have fun playing in the dirt while learning about different plants. We will grow several types of plants, decorate clay pots and care for our garden. This activity promotes participation in a positive, constructive activity that is fun at the same time. Participants will be responsible for their own plants, teaching acceptance of responsibility and building confidence.

Art Therapy uses the creative process of art making to improve and enhance the physical, mental and emotional well being of individuals of all ages. It is based on the belief that the creative process involved in artistic self-expression helps people to resolve conflicts and problems, develop interpersonal skills, manage behavior, reduce stress, increase self-esteem and self-awareness, and achieve insight.
Art therapy integrates the fields of human development, visual art (drawing, painting, sculpture, and other art forms), and the creative process.
Registration required.

Adult Fitness
Have trouble bending down to pick up objects off the floor, walking up stairs, etc? This exercise class will focus on strengthening your muscles, enhancing your balance and improving your range of motion. Special Olympic athletes are encouraged to particpate to maintain conditioning. Registration is required.

CLASSES/ACTIVITIES FOR CHILDREN AND YOUTH WITH DEVELOPMENTAL DISABILITIES

Boy Scouts & Cub Scouts
Gilmore TRC is the host of pack 702, an official Boy Scouts of America group. This pack is for boys with
developmental disabilities and meets once a week. Scouts will earn badges, have uniforms and go on camping trips. Boy Scouts of America provides a program for young people that builds character, trains them in the responsibilities of citizenship, and develops personal fitness. Scouting fees are $10 annually, fee is waived for those who participate in-school scouting. Registration required.
6-18 yrs; Tue.; 6-7 pm; $10/annually

Story Time & Games
Help your child explore his own imagination. Join us for story time and games each week at the Gilmore TRC. We will explore classic fairy tales and childhood favorites. Children will also develop skills necessary for later sports participation through fun recreational activities and games. Parents must accompany children for this program. Registration is required.

Bowling for FUN
What a great way to make new friends and improve your bowling skills. This bowling league is for all ability levels and meets at LaFayette Lanes on Raeford Road. Don't let limited ability stop you from participating. Challenge your friends to a game. Learn to keep score and how to bowl a strike. Participants must be accompanied by a parent or guardian or be authorized to be in the facility
independently. Registration is required. Season begins Sept. 21 and runs through May 10.
8-18 yrs; Mon.; 3:30-5 pm; $3/week

CCS AU Intramurals
Training program for Special Olympics Cumberland County local events, facilitated by TRC staff with participation from Cumberland County Middle and High schools AU classes. Sports learned and practiced are Volleyball, Basketball and Bowling. Volleyball will begin Sept. 9.

Tiny's Arts & Crafts Corner
This class is comprised of a whole host of activities and hobbies that are related to making things with one's own hands and skill. Projects made in the class often utilize household items such as empty container, bags, or boxes. Activities consist of scrapbooking, t-shirt painting, decoration and gift making, jewelry making, sculpting, and paper maiche'.

TRC Lunchtime Café
This class teaches how to set the table, how to cook a wide variety of food, and focuses on skills like reading, measuring, adding, identification of food/food groups, recalling and basic kitchen appliance operation. We will all share the duties of preparing a meal, setting the table and enjoying a light lunch once a week, as well as sharing the responsibility of cleaning up after the meal. Participants must pre-register.

Please Pass the Peas Cooking Class
Healthy eating and cooking skills are important for enhancing independence. The TRC offers a cooking class for adults. Participants will learn how to set the table, to cook a wide variety of food, and will leave the class with a thick book of recipes. We will all share the duties of preparing a meal, setting the table, and enjoying dinner together once a week, as well as having the responsibility of cleaning everything up after the meal. Space is limited and participants must sign-up each week by noon on Wed.
12+; Thurs.; 4:30-6 pm; $5

Respite Rescue
Parents and Caregivers need a break? The TRC offers structured recreation and leisure activities as well as community outings for participants, providing respite to caregivers. All participants must call ahead and schedule respite. Space is very limited and is granted on a first come first serve basis. All participants must register 2 weeks in advance. New participants may require an initial interview.

Therapeutic Exercise
Exercise with healing powers. Many people with disabilities are or have become at risk of becoming inactive or immobile. Inactivity and immobility decreases bone density and strength. This class is designed to increase strength, building bone density and muscle to assist in mobility and activities of daily living. Join us for an hour of aerobic exercises just for you. This class is appropriate for participants in wheelchairs or those unable to ambulate without assistive devices. Focus will be on three general areas of the body: the trunk, arm/shoulders and the legs and on four classifications of exercise: passive, active assistive, active, and resistive exercise. A Therapeutic Recreation Specialist teaches the class.

Special Olympics Cumberland County
The Gilmore Therapeutic Recreation Center is the hub for Special Olympics Cumberland County.
Special Olympics Cumberland County is a branch of Special Olympics North Carolina (SONC).
Special Olympics Cumberland County provides year-round sports training and competition for
more than 300 children and adults with intellectual disabilities. It is the fastest growing
program in North Carolina. Participants have the opportunity to train and compete in
the Special Olympic Competition in 13 different sports. Practice times and locations vary.

Fall Games
You are invited to volunteer and support your Cumberland County Special Olympic Athletes as they compete in soccer and volleyball competitions. Athletes train for a minimum of eight weeks in skills and team events and will get one day to compete. Athletes are divisioned according to age and ability and competition is always exciting. For volunteer information call 433-1000. This event is hosted by Methodist University and is open to spectators.

Special Olympics North Carolina Fall Games
Travel to High Point with us Sat., Nov. 7 and support Special Olympics Cumberland County athletes. Athletes will participate in Bocce, Cycling, Golf, and Soccer as they compete against other counties in North Carolina in this annual SONC Fall Games Competition.

3rd Annual Raven Rock Rumble Fundraiser
Come join us on a 5 or 10-mile trail run in beautiful Raven Rock State Park located in Lillington, NC. The race will be held on Nov. 21 and proceeds will benefit the athletes of Special Olympics Cumberland County.

Special Olympics Winter Sports

Special Olympics Cumberland County Basketball Competition

Line Dance
Learn all the latest steps, new and old dances. Step to the oldies and new country tunes. Feel confident dancing with your friends. This is geared for folks 55+, but is open to anyone. It is an on-going class and you can register anytime.

Senior Aerobics
Get fit and feel great! This is a low-impact aerobic class designed specifically for seniors and taught by certified aerobics instructor. Register anytime, the class is ongoing.

Senior Bridge
Bring your favorite snack and your Bridge face for a fun afternoon playing this challenging game. Four players are required for each new table.

Tai Chi for Adults
Tai Chi is an ancient form of Chinese health practice and exercise art with movements performed very slowly and thoughtfully. It has often been called moving meditation because of its gentle flowing movement. The class includes meditation techniques, stretches, and warm-ups. Benefits include stress relief; increased flexibility and suppleness, balance, coordination, and strength; respiratory endurance;
circulatory efficiency; as well as a feeling of well-being and confidence. The class is sponsored by the national Multiple Sclerosis Society and was created to benefit people with Multiple Sclerosis. Caregivers and friends are welcome. Participants do not have to be MS diagnosed to participate; other diagnoses can participate as well.
