The center is the site of our therapeutic programs for people with mental and physical challenges, but it also available to rent for special events. There is a large program/meeting room, a small room, television/game room, and kitchen.
Where Abilities and dis-Abilities Become POSS-ABILITIES
Therapeutic Recreation uses education; recreation services and leisure experiences to help people with limitations make the most of their lives – physically, mentally, emotionally and socially. Involvement in Therapeutic Recreation will result in the enhancement of health, functional ability and independence. Therapeutic Recreation is important because it can help people of all ages and backgrounds to get well, live well and stay well.
Through our programs we strive to:
•Provide education on the constructive use of leisure;
•Reduce boredom;
•Alleviate stress and anxiety;
•Introduce new recreation and cultural opportunities;
•Develop self esteem through recreation participation;
•Provide emotional and social support for participants;
•Adapt activities, as necessary, to ensure the success of the participant.
PROGRAMS
Art-I-tude!
Weekly art class exploring students creativity through hands-marking and building. The Art-I-tude! creators will make their own primitive cave drawings, traditional tribal mask, Japanese Notan, Aztec Mola collage, and many other unique projects while learning about texture, color pattern,
line, and shape. History and culture enhance the techniques learned by placing students in a larger overall art placement with the world. This class is a beginner skill level class.

Young Divincis
Weekly art class for creative individuals who are interested in learning about the Fine Art techniques of painting and drawing. Artists will learn the methods to become a better 2-d artist, drawing and painting from life and reference material, while also learning self-control, patience, and hand/
eye coordination. This is an intermediate level art class.

SPADES for Ladies
Special Populations Adult Daytime Enrichment Sessions or S.P.A.D.E.S. is an adult centered program that enhances life satisfaction through a wide variety of group activities like exercise, creative/expressive arts, cooking/baking, issues groups, nature and horticulture therapy, community
outings, speakers, and more. Activities focus on enhancing daily life skills and well-being.
18+; Tues. and Thurs.; 9 am-1 pm; $4/day
SPADES for Gentlemen

Girls & Guys Nights Out
Monthly evening community outings for youth and adults age 13+. Program focus is on community leisure opportunities, socialization and independence. Outings include places like: local sports events, movies, restaurants, shopping centers, and attractions. Space is limited;
pre-registration is required 1 week in advance.

Girls Night Out- 1st Mon. of each month

Fitness Ambassadors
Fitness Ambassadors will assist each participant inreaching their fitness goals through walking, circuit training, jogging, cycling, etc. Participants are encouraged to participate at least 3 days a week. 18+; Mon.-Thurs., 1:30-2:30 pm; Free
Bowling for FUN
This bowling league is for all ability levels and meets at LaFayette Lanes on Raeford Rd. Participants must be accompanied by a parent or guardian or be authorized to be in the facility independently. Registration is required. Season begins Sept. 12 and runs through May 7.
6-15 yrs; Mon.; 4-5 pm; $3/week
Intermediate Bowling
This bowling league is for bowlers preparing to advance to the Adult league and meets at LaFayette Lanes on Raeford Rd. Registration is required. Season begins Sept. 12 and runs through May 7.
16-18 yrs; Mon.; 4-5 pm; $3/week
Adult Bowling
Bowling is a lifelong sport in which all can participate. This bowling league is competitive and open to adults of all ability levels and meets at B&B Bowling Lanes on Fort Bragg Road. Participants have the opportunity to compete in Special Olympics. Registration is required for this program. League runs March-Dec.

Drama 101
Drama 101 will give participants the chance to learn about the art of theatre. This group is a performance group and will produce at least one theatrical work per year. This class also involves trips to local theater productions to learnmore about putting on productions.

Book Club
This book club is open to participants who enjoy reading or who would like to work on their reading skills. Club members will be divided into smaller groups based on their ability level and will be able to follow along with an audio cd.

Scouting with disAbilities
Cub Scout Pack & Boy Scout Troop #702 is for boys with disabilities. This traditional scout group is adapted to meet the instructional needs of boys with disabilities. Scouting fees are $10 annually, (fee is waived for those who participate in-school scouting). Registration required.

KinderMusik
Sing, sway, laugh, play! Children learn and grow through play, with other children, teachers, and you. Led by skilled educators, Kindermusik's research-based programs will enhance your child's development and instill a lifelong love of music.

Cooking Classes
These classes present an opportunity for participants to socialize, learn their way around the kitchen while working together to prepare a meal. Participants must register one week in advance for each class.

Wii Sports/Dance Challenge
This program incorporates video games and exercise. Participants will get to challenge their friends at various sports and dance games while they increase their hand/eye coordination, range of motion and socialization skills.

Gilmore Choir–One Voice
Gilmore is starting a performance group to be known as the Gilmore Glee Club. This club will help participants find the star within them. Choir members will perform fun and engaging dance and songs. Participants need to must register to perform. The club will give performances
quarterly. The group is conducted by music professional. Participants will be responsible for obtaining required performance attire.

Duck-Tastic Creations
This arts and crafts class has endless possibilities. Participants will learn how to make useful items out of duck tape such as wallets, bracelets, purses, rings, etc.

RC Racing Club
Club participants will learn how to drive RC Cars, build a temporary track and have the potential to travel to see and participate in RC Car races in NC.

Halloween Dance
Gilmore TRC’s annual Halloween Dance includes a costume contest, lots of ghoulish treats and many spooky tunes byour resident DJ.

Christmas Drama & Cantata presented by Gilmore TRC Players & One Voice
The Gilmore players will be performing a Christmas Production in conjunction with Christmas songs by OneVoice, Gilmore’s own performing Choir. Casting calls will be held on Mon., Sept. 12 at 5:30 pm.

Christmas Dinner and Dance
Gilmore TRC’s annual Christmas dinner and dance features all the fixings of a traditional Holiday meal and a night of dancing to Christmas music. Admission is free with a covered dish. This dance will be held at Hay Street United Methodist Church.

Valentine Dance
The annual Sweetheart’s Dance includes a cutest couple contest and features lots sweet treats and slow songs to with which to dance. This dance will be held at Hay Street United Methodist Church.

SPECIAL OLYMPICS CUMBERLAND COUNTY
The Gilmore Therapeutic Recreation Center is the hub for Special Olympics Cumberland County.
Special Olympics Cumberland County is a branch of Special Olympics North Carolina (SONC).
Special Olympics Cumberland County provides year-round sports training and competition for
more than 300 children and adults with intellectual disabilities. It is the fastest growing
program in North Carolina. Participants have the opportunity to train and compete in
the Special Olympic Competition in 13 different sports. Practice times and locations vary.

Advisory Committee
Special Olympics Cumberland County is a volunteer driven organization and is led by a fine group of volunteers called the Special Olympics Cumberland County Local Advisory Committee. This group of volunteers is comprised of family members, community friends and professionals. All
interested in having a hand in the planning of Special Olympics Cumberland County events should contact the staff at Gilmore for more information.

spectators, volunteers and registered athletes.

SONC Bocce Tournament
Cumberland County is honored to host the state Bocce tournament for the 3rd year in a row. Athletes from across the state of North Carolina will travel to Fayetteville for the Bocce Tournament on Oct. 15 at Arnette Park. Volunteers and food donations are needed.
