YOUTH DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMS

Fayetteville-Cumberland Parks & Recreation recognizesthe need for life skills programming, in addition to our traditional offerings. The following programs have been designed to enrich the lives of both FCPR youth participants as well as adults.

College Experience Field Trips
Current participants in FCPR Youth Development programs are eligible for inclusion in College Experience Field Trips. Scheduled trips are FREE* of charge and include college tours of regional schools as well as a day on campus. Trips are traditionally scheduled on days Cumberland County Schools are not in session. Participants must have participated in an FCPR Youth Development Program in the past year, or be currently enrolled, to be eligible to attend. Call 433-1021 for more information. May not include meal costs at all schools.

Counselor In Training (CIT)
Participants assist camp staff and receive career development experience working with children in a day
camp setting. Participants also receive valuable life skills education provided by the City of Fayetteville's Human Resources department as well as additional volunteer opportunities and career-related field trips offered. Applications are accepted from April 1-May 17. Applications must be accompanied by two letters of reference. Only complete application packets are accepted for consideration. Interviews will be held from May 28-30.

Job Shadowing
FCPR offers the Job Shadowing program for interested youth to fulfill required volunteer hours, learn a new skill or simply explore an area of interest! Every effort is made to match participants with a professional in their field of interest in order to learn and grow through educational activities. Volunteer schedules are determined as needed and registration is on-going. A completed Youth Application and two letters of reference are required for consideration in the program. Junior Official Program
This 3 part program will focus on the following:
• Level I will focus on Life Skills training involving decision making, conflict resolution, team building, customer service and communication.
• Level II will focus on athletic offi ciating philosophies, rule enforcements, exams, mechanics and film review.
• Level III will focus on the field/court practicum exercises with live scrimmages.

Prospective officials must complete each level in order to advance to the next phase. Upon completion of all 3 levels, graduates have the opportunity to offi ciate youth games in the FCPR Program and earn CASH! Register at any recreation center or call for more information. This 3 part program will focus on the following:
• Level I will focus on Life Skills training involving decision making, conflict resolution, team building, customer service and communication.
• Level II will focus on game day operations, record keeping, and rule enforcement.
• Level III will focus on the fi eld/court practicum exercises with live scrimmages.

Prospective scorekeepers must complete each level in order to advance to the next phase. Upon completion of all 3 levels, graduates will be afforded the benefit of on the job training. Candidates completing a minimum of four hours of scorekeeping may be eligible for hire the following season.

SPRING WORKSHOP SERIES

Youth Development Workshops are offered at a number of locations but all courses are available (free of charge!) to any and all interested participants. You need only to register and attend!

Financial Aid 101:
The Ins and Outs of Financial Aid For college-bound parents and students, understanding the financial aid process is often diffi cult, frustrating, and most of all... confusing! In this workshop, parents will gain
an understanding of fi nancial aid, FAFSA, college costs, and financial resources (such as scholarships, grants, and loans). This workshop is designed to help parents facilitate a smooth transition for their child from high school to college and beyond. Workshop is held at the Westover Recreation Center.

How to Prepare Your Child for College
Eighty percent (80%) of adults say that encouraging young people to do well in school is the most important thing an adult can do for a child. As a parent, you are the first teacher. However, no one gave you a "How To" manual on how to help your child be successful in school. This workshop will provide parents with 10 strategies for helping their children to be successful from kindergarten through their senior year in high school. Workshop is held at the Kiwanis Recreation Center.

Choices, Choices, Choices: How to Make Choices that Prepare me for School Success!
Do you realize that what you are doing today will have an impact on what you are able to do tomorrow? This workshop provides middle and high school students with information on how to develop a 10-Year educational plan. In an interactive setting, students will learn how to create a written plan by transforming their long-term goals into reality for life beyond high school. Workshop is held at the Cliffdale Recreation Center.

Not Just Another Test: Strategies for Taking the SAT & ACT
The workshop will provide an overview of the differences between the SAT and ACT college entrance Exams. Many differences exist between the two exams that often leave students wishing they'd known more about the test prior to sitting for the exam. This workshop examines those differences and provides helpful strategies to prepare. Students will learn how to relieve anxiety while taking the tests. Bonus information will be provided on study skills and time management skills. Workshop is held at the Westover Recreation Center.

Math Fear Factor
What's your biggest fear in math? Students will learn how to gain knowledge and skills that help them to overcome the basics related to math in order to be successful in math courses. Students will learn how to turn any math problem into a relatable event in everyday life. This session will include the Game of Dominoes, the Game of Math Feud, and a Math Rap Session. Math Fear Factor will teach students how to love math! Workshop is held at the Westover Recreation Center.

It's a Different World: The Emotional Roller Coaster of Letting Go of my College Bound Child
As a parent of a college bound high school junior/senior, you will experience a wave of emotions. Excitement, pride, joy, anxiousness, worry and even a sense of loss. After parenting for 18 years, the transition from hands-on to hands-off parenting can take an emotional toll. Learn 10 strategies to cope with "empty-nest" syndrome. Workshop is held at the Cliffdale Recreation Center.

The Offi ce of College Access Programs' mission is to encourage and assist youth who are traditionally under-represented in college with preparation for, entry into, and completion of a college degree. Through GEAR UP, Educational Talent Search and Upward Bound Programs, a broad range of high-quality college preparatory services to students, parents, and educators are provided. BACK TO SCHOOL TEEN EXPLOSION CONFERENCE
Fayetteville-Cumberland Parks & Recreation is proud to partner, once again, with the Mind OVER Matter YouthDevelopment Institute! This partnership allows us the opportunity of offering a top-notch conference for local youth to helpprepare for the upcoming school year.

The Back-to-School Teen Explosion Conference© will be held on Fri., July 26 at the Westover Recreation Center. Thepurpose of the event is to bridge school success with career and college readiness by Providing an academic event for youth in the Sandhills region of North Carolina.

This conference empowers teens to embrace personal school achievement and life beyond high school, by linking teens to real life opportunities to meet local business owners and participate in activities relevant to their future. The event is filled with a day of fun yet educational activities. Middle and high school students will participate in workshop sessions on topics to include school success, college preparation, test-taking skills and fi nancial literacy. Through participation in this conference, teens will:

• Gain knowledge on how to prepare for school and to truly be successful in the upcoming year
• Understand, through relevancy, the link between school and work-force development
• Meet local business/community representatives to learn more about possible career opportunities
• Complete a career assessment to gain customized knowledge about potential career paths that may be of interest to participants
• Gain knowledge about how to prepare for life after high school
